Transformit introduces ShadowGraphing Transformit has introduced ShadowGraphing, a new technique of tension fabric architecture where the aluminum framing is integrated into the structure as a design element. The result is a dynamic effect featuring dramatic lines and shadows. Transformit president, Cindy Thompson says the technique was developed in response to its clients’ need to customize basic elements, such as walls and canopies, to fit into certain environments and contexts. “The design trend in recent years has been to minimize and hide the structural components as much as possible. However, we are finding that in many instances, a more appropriate and unique expression can be created by using the framework to create patterns, shapes or even messaging with the frames,” says Thompson. The first installed application of ShadowGraphing was created for the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY. Exhibits designer Matt Handy challenged Transformit to create a custom canopy for the museum’s “Field of Play” exhibit. ““We wanted puzzle pieces integrated into the canopy design because it’s a reference inspired by the museums comprehensive toy collection on display in our galleries,” says Handy.
