TEDx Detroit!

Just got back from the first TEDx Detroit event. Great Job Charlie Wollborg and all the sponsors. There were so many people involved, I can't name them now but I will try later. The event was a combo of speakers TED speaker video and performance. It was inspiring and made me cry twice!. D Blair the Detroit Poet was fantastic and Robert Jones sang a song about his daughter that was equally perfect.

I am a bit of a pain in the ass when it comes to events and presentations, I have a work background and can be a harsh critic. I try not to be but it still sneaks out. These people had heart- you can't beat that.

There is too much to go over about the event- my head is FULL. Check out the links- and plan on attending the next one. Charlie?

1. They say that Twitter is a great place to communicate but actually it is a giant vacuum. Witty and dumb things go in never to be heard again. Most people never respond back to a tweet.

2. That said, Twitter is a great place to listen and learn. Just don't expect any response or very little.

3. It is not for the weak of heart. You may think you are the coolest thing to utter a sentence but you are not. Don't believe what your mama told you- no one is as clever as your mom thinks you are.

4. People who tweet a lot ususally talk a lot. The people who tweet a lot get the most responses due to averages. But you'll know, they aren't that hot.

5. It is a lot like high school. There are a few tweeters (and bloggers) who get referred and RT'd like they are Rock Stars and I have no idea why. A few are even silly and mean as far as I am concerned. I am still waiting for them to catch up with their reputation.

6. There is too much damn information out there. Twitter is a great newsletter that keeps you up to date with all you need to know. But it is sooooo much. You will see so much that you just don't have time to read, comprehend or integrate. Kind of makes you feel inadequate.

7. Twitter is for vain people. Actually I think it is the opposit. See #1. I repeat- no one really cares and it is definately not a conversation.

8. Your competitors are listening even if you do not know it.

9. Black people seem to love the #contributetothistopic conversations. I do not know why. I am not black, never have been. It is a generalization but if you check it out it is true.

10. Your inner social circle is a lot like you. Probably so is your twitter universe. Branch out and listen to people not like you. they are hard to find, but worth it.

11. You cannot explain the benefits of Twitter to anyone. It is a lot like sex- unless you do it you have no idea.

If you have a show in January or February then it is time to get moving on it. Time flies when you are having fun. It really flies over the holidays. It is pretty standard in life that you can have things cheap, good and fast and you get to pick any two. The easiest way to save money in the exhibit industry is to order early and it slow boat to your trade show. So why start so early- here are the top 5 reasons: 1. What takes the longest time to do? Get the digital artwork agreed upon. How many people are on the committee for the artwork layout? The more people the longer it takes. Make sure there is a lot of pre-planning here. Bring in the decision maker up front. You risk getting it done and having the decision maker say "no" at the end.

I spent Sunday updated my website, the look and the pages. I hope you like it. If you have any suggestions please let me know. I am always looking to improve. There is more I want to do. I really want to make my posts short and have them link to the full article. Just need to find the time to find out how.
